Δύο κοινότητες που προσπαθούν να συνυπάρξουν μέσα σε μια «καουμπόικη» κοινωνία

Βρισκόμαστε σε μια μικρή πόλη του Μεξικού και παρακολουθούμε το Jaripeos, μια φαντασμαγορική γιορτή ροντέο που πραγματοποιείται κάθε Χριστούγεννα, συγκεντρώνοντας πλήθη από τις γύρω περιοχές.

Η σύγκρουση ανάμεσα στην ομοφυλοφιλία και την τοξική αρρενωπότητα υποβόσκει, με διαφορετικές εντάσεις, αναδεικνύοντας τα προβλήματα μιας προσεκτικά κρυμμένης κοινότητας που προσπαθεί να αναπνεύσει μέσα σε μια σκληρή, ανδροκρατούμενη κοινωνία.

Παραβρέθηκα στην επίσημη προβολή της ταινίας στο Φεστιβάλ Ντοκιμαντέρ Θεσσαλονίκης και είχα την ευκαιρία να ακούσω τους δημιουργούς της, Efraín Mojica και Rebecca Zweig, να μιλούν για τις δυσκολίες που αντιμετώπισαν προκειμένου να ολοκληρώσουν την ταινία τους μέσα σε διάστημα τεσσάρων ετών.

Πρόκειται για μια ποιητική ταινία, με όμορφη φωτογραφία και προσεγμένη σκηνοθεσία, που βασίζεται στις αφηγήσεις ανδρών οι οποίοι αναζητούν τη θέση τους μέσα σε μια κατεξοχήν αρρενωπή δραστηριότητα, όπως το ροντέο, και κατ’ επέκταση σε ένα ακόμη πιο απαιτητικό πεδίο: την καθημερινή τους πάλη μέσα σε μια συντηρητική κοινωνία.

Many people believed that among the immature and reckless figures currently leading the United States, there was at least one adult: Marco Rubio. That illusion, however, did not last long.

During his recent appearance at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting, reports suggest that the U.S. Secretary of State warned his counterparts that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz would be very difficult to restore even after the war. According to these reports, Iran is unlikely to step back from the tolls it has imposed on the passage.

The same sources say that his counterparts looked at him with surprise and confusion, struggling to understand whether these officials are aware that their own actions have contributed to the very consequences Rubio was describing.

“Marco, we expected the United States to take a tougher stance on Russia, but instead you opened a front with Iran. None of this makes sense,” the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, is reported to have told him. According to the same leaked information, this was one of the mildest remarks he received.

Street Photography in Turkey. I walk through the narrow streets of Buyukada, once known as Prigkipos, and marvel at the island’s unique beauty. In Turkish, Buyukada means “big island,” while the name Prigkipos likely comes from the island’s history during the Byzantine Empire, when it served as a place of exile for princes who had their eyes on the emperor’s throne.

As I approach the beach, I pass a charming antique shop. The vibrant colors and the sense of care and order inside immediately catch my attention. But what surprises me most is hearing the music of Mikis Theodorakis playing from within the store.

Street Photography in Istanbul. Walking through the streets of Istanbul, I search for a way toward the sea. It is summer, yet there is an unexpectedly refreshing coolness in the air. A cloud drifts across the sun, allowing me to take advantage of the soft diffusion of light. The atmosphere gentles as the cloud fully embraces the sun. I know it will not last long.

I lift my camera, discovering another version of the world—the unnoticed. A couple walks downhill hand in hand. A man relaxes, seated quietly in his chair.
